Choosing Wisely® is a national campaign developed by the ABIM Foundation and supported by leading medical specialty societies to help guide conversations between patients and clinicians about whether a medical test or procedure treatment is truly necessary.

The Choosing Wisely campaign offers information and resources for clinicians and patients, created by the ABIM Foundation in partnership with Consumer Reports, about common tests and procedures that will help you have important conversations with your physician.

In 2014, with support from the ABIM Foundation funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, MHQP launched Choosing Wisely Massachusetts® to advance healthcare quality by encouraging important doctor-patient conversations about unnecessary treatment options that may sometimes cause harm. Part of the ABIM Foundation’s national Choosing Wisely® campaign, the statewide campaign encourages doctors and patients to make healthcare choices that are evidence-based, efficient, safe, and truly necessary.

Choosing Wisely Massachusetts® brought together an Advisory Group composed of providers, consumers, employers, payers, state agencies, and professional societies—advise on the best way to disseminate and raise the profile of the Choosing Wisely campaign with patients and physicians in Massachusetts

The Advisory Group was charged to:

  • Identify important topics of conversation for clinicians and patients in Massachusetts
  • Advise and contribute to the development of a statewide multi-stakeholder dissemination campaign
  • Participate in implementing activities with the goals of raising awareness and knowledge of Choosing Wisely with Massachusetts patients and clinicians
